Julep
Sweetest girl you’ll never meet
Julep came to our family during the pandemic from the local CASPCA rescue. She came with a few notes about needing a home free of children & a history of food guarding. Once she had spent a few weeks with us, we came to understand there was a lot going on with our girl.
In many ways, Julep has been a challenging dog for us. Weighing in at 70 lbs, she is certainly our biggest doggie right now. Seeing the behaviors she displayed towards other dogs was very reassuring, as she is a kind, gentle, playful pup with her peers. Her behavior with humans has required a lot of training on both of our parts.
At the sanctuary, Julep has a carefully constructed space where she can thrive in the way she needs to. Julep has more routines, “rules”, & 1:1 time than many of the other dogs, as that is when she does her best - when she knows exactly what to expect. Training with Julep has been so educational for both of us, and she truly adores all of the attention & comforts it has provided for her.
Having a reactive dog can be a challenge until you find the cadence to provide them support, professional help when needed, & accept that this animal is going to always lead a different sort of life than the kind of dog you just let roam free or throw in the car to go meet friends. Being able to make peace with that has brought so much levity to our family. Behind closed doors, Julep is the first dog to lay in your lap & the first dog to lay in the middle of all the littles. We could not be more grateful for the ways she has opened our eyes & for the special people in our life that have been patient & understanding with us as we navigate her journey.
